Hora Poli is the classic Greek word game Χώρα Πόλη (“country, city”): a letter is drawn and everyone races to write a first name, surname, country, city, animal, object and plant that start with it. Χώρα·Πόλη by Modex Apps puts it on your phone for free, on iPhone and Android, and checks every answer for you. The game itself is in Greek.
If you grew up in Greece or Cyprus you probably played it on paper at school, on the beach or on long car trips. Greeks abroad know it too: it is one of the easiest ways to play in Greek with family and friends, and a good way for children and learners to practise Greek spelling.
All of them. The Greek name is Χώρα Πόλη, and the first letter, Χ, has no single Latin equivalent, so people write it as Hora Poli, Xora Poli or Chora Poli. You will also see it as “Χώρα Πόλη Φυτό Ζώο” or “Χώρα Πόλη Ζώο Φυτό Πράγμα”, after the columns on the paper sheet. In other countries the same game is called Scattergories, Stadt-Land-Fluss, Petit Bac or simply “Categories”.
A random Greek letter is drawn. Before time runs out, every player writes one Greek word starting with that letter in each of the seven categories the app uses:
Then everyone compares answers. The app scores them the way most Greek families do: 10 points for a valid answer nobody else wrote, 5 points if another player wrote the same word, 20 points if you were the only player with any answer in that category, −5 for a wrong word and 0 for an empty box. The full rules, in Greek, are in our rules and scoring guide.
Our answer lists come from the same dictionary the app uses to judge answers, so every word on them is one the game accepts. They are in Greek:
Hora Poli (Greek: Χώρα Πόλη, “country, city”) is the classic Greek pen-and-paper word game, the Greek version of Scattergories or Stadt-Land-Fluss. Χώρα·Πόλη by Modex Apps is a free app for iPhone and Android that plays it in Greek, with every answer checked automatically.
All three. They are Latin spellings of the same Greek name, Χώρα Πόλη. The Greek letter Χ is written as H, X or Ch depending on who types it, so Hora Poli, Xora Poli and Chora Poli all mean the same game.
No. The app is in Greek only: the letters are Greek, the answers must be Greek words, and the dictionary that judges them is Greek. It suits players who read and write Greek, including Greeks abroad and people learning the language.
Yes. The app is free to download and includes 4 games and 2 duels per day. An optional Pro subscription (monthly, yearly or lifetime) removes the daily limits.
Open the app, create a room and send your friends the invite link or the 6-digit code. Up to 20 players get the same letter at the same moment, wherever they are, and the app scores every answer automatically.
